DEA responds to explosive "60 Minutes" report about opioid crisis

Trump's drug czar nominee under fire for pushing bill that weakened drug enforcement

The nomination for the position, Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa., co-sponsored the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016, which passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives without objection.

The announcement comes just days after an article was released by The Washington Post and CBS's "60 Minutes" reporting Marino sponsored a 2016 law that weakened the Drug Enforcement Administration's authority to stop companies from distributing opioids in already devastated areas. Among many headline-making moments at the presser, Trump said he would take another look at his Drug Czar nominee in light of the 60 Minutes/Washington Post report that came out over the weekend.

Trump called Marino "a good man" on Monday but said, somewhat ominously, "We're going to be looking into Tom".

Among Democrats, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a conservative representing a state ravaged by opioid addiction, called on Trump to withdraw Marino's nomination.

Marino was the "chief advocate" for the legislation, the report says.

Marino's opposition to Obamacare is well aligned with Trump's.

The Post reported Sunday that Marino and other members of Congress, along with the nation's major drug distributors, prevailed upon the DEA and the Justice Department to agree to an industry-friendly law that undermined efforts to restrict the flow of pain pills that have led to tens of thousands of deaths. "Even today's critics weren't aware of the specific implications", the official said.

Interviewed by Fox News Radio's Brian Kilmeade, Trump said Marino "felt compelled" to step down from the job.

"He felt compelled. He feels very strong about the opioid problem and the drug problem, which is a worldwide problem". It has been two months since he said it was an emergency and pledged to devote more resources to addressing the issue. He said his administration would declare the opioid epidemic a national emergency next week ― something he originally promised in August. "It's a very important step", Trump told a reporter who asked when a declaration would be made. "He's a great guy", Mr Trump said during a Rose Garden news conference Monday afternoon.

"This mind-set - it's extremely risky to legitimate business", Marino reportedly told Holder.
