Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., has introduced a new mobile platform, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 636, created to provide improvements to device performance, enhanced gaming and display technology support in comparison to the Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platform. It features the X12 4GLTE SnapDragon modem that enables the 600 mbps high download speed.

From here, Qualcomm's roadmap aims for carriers to test 5G in 2018, with the first networks to go live in 2019.

Snapdragon X50 will be paired with LTE modem and the combined platform can provide multi-mode 4G/5G capability with dual connectivity.

Additionally, Qualcomm has also unveiled a series of components that will help device manufacturers to support T-Mobile's new 600MHz spectrum which is now in deployment.

"Achieving the world's first announced 5G data connection with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset on 28GHz millimetre wave spectrum is truly a testament to Qualcomm Technologies' leadership in 5G and extensive expertise in mobile connectivity", said Cristiano Amon, executive vice-president of Qualcomm Technologies.

This reference phone is 9mm thick and comes with a bezel-less design, keeping up with the current trend of most smartphones. Qualcomm believes that 5G smartphone production on a massive level can start somewhere in the first half of 2019. Thanks to a new codec, the audio capacity will also be Hi-Fi.
