Disney held talks to acquire most of 21st Century Fox

Anything can happen day is falling on a Monday this week as published reports say the Walt Disney Co. has been holding talks to buy most of 21st Century Fox.

The deal would involve Fox's movie studio and TV production business, leaving Rupert Murdoch's media empire focused primarily on news and sports, according to CNBC's David Faber. The fact that Disney and Fox were in talks in the first place would indicate that there remains a chance, however slight, that the studios might yet come to an agreement.

The buyout mainly concerns 20th Century Fox film properties, and would also remove the company as a Disney film competitor.

The discussions reflect a view among Fox executives that the media company could not reach the size needed to compete with Amazon.com Inc, Netflix Inc and other major media players, according to CNBC.

Qualcomm is also attempting to close its acquisition of NXP Semiconductors NV, one of the largest makers of chips for vehicles. Broadcom has been trying to get regulatory approval for its purchase of Brocade Communications Systems Inc since 2016.

While Marvel Studios (which is owned by Disney) has regained the rights to properties in the past, this would undoubtedly be one of the studio's most important acquisitions in its history given its potential.

If a deal like this did happen and did receive regulatory approval, it could have some significant effects on sports.

The company would obtain 21st Century's film studio and television channels including FX, FXX, National Geographic along with global stations such as Star and Sky. With the company about to launch their own streaming service, that would be a huge boost.

"I see lots of synergies for Disney". In light of the news, neither Fox nor Disney have been able to be reached for comment or confirmation. Yes, the Fox broadcast network would still have plenty of non-sports content, but if their TV studio was included in this sale, they'd have to pick up their scripted programming elsewhere instead of in-house.

Fox's biggest movie franchise at the moment is the Disney-owned X-Men franchise, which easily could fold into the Marvel Cinematic Universe should Disney buy Fox.
