Missouri is taking page from Europe and investigating Google

Hawley's office says U.S. regulators were wrong not to pursue legal action over potential antitrust violations

His office is investigating to determine if Google has violated the state's main consumer protection law.

Google has largely steered clear of antitrust problems in the U.S. That's not the case in Europe, where the company faces a fine of about $2.7 billion over the display of its shopping ads.

The Missouri attorney general's office is investigating whether Google has run afoul of consumer protection or antitrust laws in the state. According to a news release, he also wants to know if Google is manipulating its search algorithm to "preference websites owned by Google and to demote websites that compete with Google." .

The subpoena seeks information about Google´s use of the vast trove of data it collects, including information harvested from devices, online queries and credit card transactions.

Allahabad Bank Q2 net rises 8 pc to Rs 70 cr
Non-interest income, comprising treasury revenues, fees and commissions, grew by 58 per cent to Rs 16,016 crore. Total income of the company, however, stood at Rs 192.75 crore for the quarter under consideration.

"When a company has access to as much consumer information as Google does, it's my duty to ensure they are using it appropriately", Hawley said. Google has said it provides consumers with the option to control their privacy settings and does not provide third parties with personally identifiable information like names, email addresses and billing information.

Hawley's office argues that federal regulators were wrong not to sue Google and that inaction left an opening for a potential state suit.

In a statement, Google spokesman Patrick Lenihan said that his company has not yet received Hawley's subpoena. The attorneys general of Utah and the District raised a flag a year ago, urging the Federal Trade Commission to reopen its investigation into Google's search practices, although the agency has not said it would do so.
