Saudi-led coalition strike puts Yemeni airport 'out of service'

Saudis Will Open Aid Deliveries to Some 'Loyal' Yemen Ports

The Saudi-led military coalition shut down Yemen's sea and air ports as well as borders on November 6 in response to a missile attack by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels near Riyadh. The missile was intercepted near the capital of the country.

The U.S.is supporting a Saudi Arabia-led coalition in the conflict, with intelligence, aerial refueling and the sale of weapons.

Houthi officials said two airstrikes targeted Sanaa's global airport in the rebel-held capital early on Tuesday, making it unusable for aid flights and further complicating humanitarian efforts into the country, Al Jazeera reported. While the language of the resolution calls to "increase efforts to adopt all necessary and appropriate measures to prevent civilian casualties and increase humanitarian access", it does not call for an end to USA support of the Saudi-led coaltion attacking Yemen.

Saudi-led coalition launched three airstrikes on the main civil airport north of Yemen's capital Sanaa on Tuesday, completely destroying the airport's air navigation system, the airport's spokesman Mazin Ghanim told Xinhua.

This isn't the first time Saudi planes have attacked the airport, and indeed strikes against aid delivery sites, the airport and Hodeidah Port, have been recurring throughout the war, making aid shipments all the more complicated even on those rare occasions when the Saudis will let such aid in at all.

Meanwhile, Aden's port - which is controlled by allies of Saudi Arabia - does not have the capacity, according to the United Nations, to handle the necessary volume of humanitarian cargo and would mean hazardous cross-line deliveries.

Many reputed people funded her education in Britain, including Mary Hobhouse, Adelaide Manning, and Florence Nightingale. Sorabji, born in Maharashtra's Nashik in 1866, is also recognised as the first woman graduate of Bombay University.

"I don't think discussions (on new inspections) should hamper the port remaining open", he added.

Skoog said he was "distraught" but did not indicate whether Sweden, a non-permanent council member, will seek another emergency council meeting on the aid blockade.

The strike comes just a day after Saudi ambassador to the UN Abdallah Al-Mouallimi agreed to reopen some ports to allow aid in.

McGoldrick emphasized on the fact that United Nations aid was the main lifeline for most of Yemen's population, seven million of whom are at risk of starvation.

After two years of a devastating war, the Houthis still control much of Yemen's north while the south falls under the embattled President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, whose government is recognised by the worldwide community and who is supported by the Saudi-led coalition.
