Security firm beats Apple Face ID with a mask

Face ID beaten by mask, not an effective security measure - Top News - Bkav Corporation

"The mask is crafted by combining 3D printing with makeup and 2D images, besides some special processing on the cheeks and around the face, where there are large skin areas, to fool AI of Face ID", explains Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Bkav's Vice President of Cyber Security.

What is intriguing, however, is that Bkav's model used 2D, non-moving representations for the eyes, which means that Face ID's sensors don't register eye movement. We also found that odd but were able to replicate the unusual behavior on an iPhone X unit Apple provided us.

The mother, Sana Sherwani, and the son, Ammar, realized the Face ID could be fooled shortly after purchasing the device, Attaullah Malik, the father of Ammar, said in a LinkedIn post.

Security company Bkav from Vietnam are claiming that they have been able to trick Face ID on the new iPhone X using a mask.

Apples' claims stated that Face ID had a one in a million chance of another person being able to unlock it and that it had stress-tested the technology using silicone masks made by Hollywood studios.

As it's a proof-of-concept hacking technique that has yet to be confirmed by other security researchers, exact details on how the Bkav researchers created the only mask that can beat Face ID are thin on the ground. Face ID allows iPhone X users to unlock their phone just by looking at it.

Dream Chaser Spacecraft To Conduct Missions To The ISS
Ten years into development, the spacecraft completed a successful free-flight drop test in the Mojave Desert in November 2017. The craft was made by the Sierra Nevada Corporation and was tested at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in California.

Vietnamese cybersecurity firm Bkav claims to have fooled Apple's Face ID authentication using an affordable mask.

Apple declined to comment beyond linking to the FaceID support page on its website. Instead, they focused only on specific spots of the mask to trick the depth-mapping technology. "This seems like an unlikely sequence of events".

"Country leaders, leaders of major corporations...are the ones that need to know about the issue, because their devices are worth illegal unlock attempts", the company wrote. Exploitation is hard for normal users, but simple for professional ones, ' they added.

He added, "Strong authentication can not be faked, gamed, or manipulated".

However, other tech experts assure us that the average iPhone user is not at risk, at least for the time being. The fact that Face ID can be fooled shows that biometric methods don't offer foolproof security.
