US Lawmakers Push Attorney General On Russia-Related Contacts During Campaign

Freedom Caucus founder Jim Jordan is one of the leading voices pushing for Attorney General Sessions to create a probe to look into James Comey

Now, Sessions said he recalled a March 2016 meeting with Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

In Page's testimony, he said he "mentioned [the meeting] briefly to Senator Sessions as I was walking out the door" of a dinner just days before his trip to Russian Federation.

Sessions responded to these revelations by insisting that he'd met with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in his capacity as US senator (not as a Trump surrogate), and that they did not discuss the 2016 election.

The letter says the prosecutors will recommend whether an investigation is merited, whether any matters now under investigation require more resources and whether it is necessary to appoint a special counsel.

A statement responding to concerns from Republican lawmakers and issued in the name of A-G Jeff Sessions said he is leaving open the possibility.

The attorney general previously recused himself from matters related to the 2016 presidential campaign. Sessions said he no memory of that interaction. "I have always told the truth, and I have answered every question as I understood them and to the best of my recollection, as I will continue to do today ..."

Arab League To Meet On Iran at Saudi Request
Referring to the Saudi claim, the French President had raised the prospect of possible sanctions with regard to those activities. President Donald Trump decertified the agreement and imposed sanctions on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

He struck a similar note before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, when he denied knowledge of communications between Russians and Trump campaign officials.

"I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath". Papadopoulos, in pleading guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, has admitted he told Trump and a group of other campaign officials, including Sessions, that he had contacts who could help arrange a meeting between Trump and Putin.

Sessions repeatedly declined to answer questions related to the infamous dossier about Donald Trump prepared by retired British agent Christopher Steele, saying he would have to refer questions to the investigation by Mueller.

Elsewhere in his testimony, Sessions disappointed congressional Republicans by saying that the Justice Department would need a "factual basis" to appoint a second special counsel tasked with investigating Hillary Clinton's role in the Uranium One deal, and that no such basis now exists.

Representative Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said five congressional committees, including the oversight panel, had investigated the deal and "identified no evidence to substantiate allegations that Secretary Clinton orchestrated, manipulated, or otherwise coerced" the interagency committee to approve the deal. "Each of those are pretty special, factual situations", Sessions said, "and we will use the proper standards".

To that end, the New York Times reported on Monday night, "People close to the White House believe Mr. Sessions can stop the president from firing him by appointing a special counsel to investigate the uranium deal". Mr. Mueller was the F.B.I. director at the time. The move, detailed in a letter to Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, comes after Trump has criticized his Justice Department for not doing more investigation of his former political rival.
