Yemen: Saudi Arabia authorizes flights to Sanaa

Arab world’s richest nation Saudi Arabia commits genocide on the Arab world’s poorest country Yemen

Humanitarian aid workers arrived in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa yesterday, after a almost three week blockade by the Saudi-led military coalition, an official at the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) said.

According to the White House, the Houthi rebels, backed by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have used destabilizing missile systems to target Saudi Arabia-systems that were not present in Yemen before the conflict.

The United Nations has warned that unless the blockade is lifted, Yemen will face "the largest starvation the world has seen for decades".

Aid shipments of food and medicines to the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida continue to be blocked by the coalition.

The country also faces one of the world's worst cholera outbreaks in modern history.

OCHA said in its latest report on Thursday that Yemeni fuel importing companies "will not be able to supply local markets at the end of this week". Two days later, the Saudi-led coalition announced it would reopen the Sanaa airport and the key Port of Hodeida for humanitarian purposes the following day.

Ahmed Ben Lassoued of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said 32 flights have been cancelled since November 6, when the coalition ordered a tightening of the Yemen blockade.

Some 17 million Yemenis are in desperate need of food, seven million of whom are at risk of starvation, according to United Nations figures.

"It is good news, but we are still waiting to see the specific details", Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations humanitarian chief for Yemen, said of Wednesday's announcement. "Innocent civilians, including children, are still at risk of starvation and malnutrition due to this brutal blockade that has already taken its toll on the civilian population of the country".

Humanitarian aid deliveries have been resumed after Saudi authorities informed the UN on Friday that they would allow civilian flights operated by the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) to arrive in the Yemeni capital beginning Saturday.

UNICEF is also waiting to send vaccines, aid sources said. Humanitarian aid accounts for 20-25 percent of food imports into the country.
