Are we about to see the end of net neutrality?

Trump's FCC chair shuts down celebrities pushing net neutrality conspiracy theory

The FCC is set to repeal net neutrality in a vote on December 14th, but its comment period - which is meant to give the public a voice in the process - has been beset with problems.

According to one report from data scientist Jeff Kao, over 1.3 million comments have been proven to be fraudulent in nature thus far, with many comments impersonating USA residents or using duplicate email addresses.

The FCC's plan to roll back Title II Net Neutrality regulations has been the subject of dire controversy and heated debate lately.

Citing the findings of Schneiderman's office and other researchers, the senators wrote, "These reports raise serious concerns as to whether the record the FCC is now relying on has been tampered with and merits the full attention of, and investigation by, the FCC before votes on this item are cast".

Meanwhile, organizers say they expect more than 600 protests at all 50 states at Verizon stores and at lawmakers' offices in Washington this Thursday, a week before the vote.

Schneiderman said that his office believed the identities of Americans were stolen and used to submit comments on net neutrality to the FCC. "This is an attempt by people who want to keep the Obama Administration's heavy-handed Internet regulations to delay the vote because they realize that their effort to defeat the plan to restore Internet freedom has stalled", FCC spokeswoman Tina Pelkey said via email.

A spokesperson for the FCC said, "At today's press conference, they didn't identify a single comment relied upon in the draft order as being questionable". The FCC needs to get to the bottom of this mess.

Tennessee's search now turns toward Kevin Sumlin
Sources tell us that he's made a decision to stay put, and that he was offered a higher salary and an extension on his contract. Over at USA TODAY Sports, columnist Dan Wolken filed a story this afternoon on NC State and its football coach, Dave Doeren .

"[It is] incumbent upon the FCC and all of my colleagues to stand back, figure out what's in this record before us and get to the bottom of these stolen identities", said Rosenworcel.

Since the open letter was published late last month, roughly 3,000 people from across the country have reached out to Schneiderman's office, including 350 New Yorkers, claiming that their names were used to submit comments without their knowledge, Schneiderman said. "We're going to hold them to that - and, in the meantime, it's vital that the FCC delay the vote until we know what happened", said Schneiderman.

The FCC is expected to vote on February 14 on Chairman Ajit Pai's plan to scrap the 2015 landmark net neutrality rules, moving to give broadband service providers sweeping power over what content consumers can access.

Twenty-eight US senators, including Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, also sent a letter to Pai Monday urging him to postpone the vote in light of the investigation.

"While I fundamentally disagree with the merits of the FCC's proposal, what is equally concerning is the lack of integrity to the FCC's process that has led to this point", said FCC Commissioner Rosenworcel, a Democrat.

Meanwhile, an FCC member called on the commission to delay a scheduled December 14 vote on repealing net neutrality rules enacted under the Obama administration until an investigation can be completed. One campaign says it has generated more than 750,000 phone calls to legislators.
