UN Security Council Imposes New Sanctions on North Korea

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks with Chinese Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Wu Haitao ahead of the United Nations Security Council session on imposing new sanctions on North Korea in New York on December 22

The UN Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions on North Korea today in response to the latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says is capable of reaching anywhere on the USA mainland.

The US continues to stress out that they are looking for a diplomatic solution, but the new sanctions aims to increase the pressure on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The resolution bans the supply of almost 75 percent of refined oil products to North Korea, puts a cap on crude deliveries and orders the repatriation of all North Korean nationals working overseas by the end of 2019.

President Donald Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if it attacks the United States while North Korea insists the world must now accept that it is a nuclear power.

That will reduce the flow of fuel from a previous ceiling set by the council of two million barrels a year.

The resolution that was adopted will restrict new deliveries of petrol products by up to 90 per cent, to 500,000 barrels a year, and crude oil at 4 million barrels a year.

"Today, we cut deeper", Haley said.

Many AT&T workers already expected to receive 10 percent raises and $1,000 lump-sum back wages as a result of an agreement announced last week .

According to the US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, "It (the resolution) sends the unambiguous message to Pyongyang that further defiance will invite further punishments and isolation".

US diplomats have made clear they are seeking a diplomatic solution but have proposed new, tougher sanctions to ratchet up pressure on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Washington has been imposing sanctions on the country since 2008, banning the export of goods and services to the country, with little effect.

Tens of thousands of North Koreans have been sent to Russian Federation and China to earn revenue for Pyongyang, working in what United Nations rights officials have described as "slave-like conditions".

The resolution does not halt the supply of crude oil from China to North Korea, even though the U.S. strongly pressured China to halt such shipments.

North Korea on November 29 said it successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile in a "breakthrough" that puts the US mainland within range of its nuclear weapons whose warheads could withstand re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere.

The forced repatriation of foreign workers would also cut off vital sources of foreign currency and investment not only for the government but also for North Korea's emerging market economy, he said.
