YouTube to beef up staff, algorithms policing content

YouTube to Expand Teams Reviewing Extremist Content

"I've also seen up-close that there can be another, more troubling, side of YouTube's openness", Wojcicki wrote.

YouTube is taking steps to crack down on videos that violate its policies.

The backlash on YouTube over inappropriate children's content has been especially severe, with brands including Mondelez and Mars pulling advertising that ran alongside some of these videos.

"Some bad actors are exploiting our openness to mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm", Wojcicki wrote.

YouTube said it has taken down 150,000 videos for violent extremism - in large part because of machines flagging more videos for human reviewers to take down.

Wojcicki says that over the previous year, YouTube has invested in new systems that combat inappropriate videos, updated its policies on what content can appear on the platform and established new machine-learning technology that can enforce those policies.

GM hopes to add more vendors soon, although the automaker says it is unclear how many the platform may ultimately host. Wingstop Inc .: The Dallas-based chicken wing brand lets drivers reorder their favorite menu items and pay ahead.

Wojicki says that YouTube has learned some valuable lessons from its efforts to stamp out extremist content. Since YouTube laid out new policies aimed at curbing extremist videos on the platform after the London Bridge attacks in June, the company said its machines have improved at catching extremist videos shortly after they were uploaded. She promised to provide creators with more transparency and tools to help get their business restored if they believe their videos have been flagged in error.

To address the concerns of advertisers, YouTube will establish sweeping new guidelines for which channels and videos are eligible for advertising.

"We've heard loud and clear from creators that we have to be more accurate when it comes to reviewing content, so we don't demonetize videos (apply a "yellow icon") by mistake", she wrote. In a separate blog post on YouTube's creator blog, Wojicki wrote that, "This was a year of awesome growth and innovation, but I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on what has also been a very tough year for our creator community". The company will be enforcing stricter criteria for monetisation, which it says will help "vetted creators see more stability around their revenue". Wojcicki did not lay out specific changes, but said YouTube planned to speak to advertisers and content creators in the coming weeks to hone its approach.

In November, the New York Times reported on a number of offensive and sometimes brutal videos found on the family-friendly YouTube Kids app.

Still, two major crisis in one year may sour some marketers on YouTube for good.
