Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 4.7 percent, closing Tuesday to 21,610.24 after a rally in the last hour shaved off some off the losses.

Shares of Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based CVS Health Corp. slumped almost 3 percent, or $2.03, to $72.32 in afternoon trading on another down day for broader indexes Thursday.

On Oct. 25 1929, a Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average closed at 301.

On Monday, the Dow finished down 4.6 percent, the biggest decline in percentage terms since August 2011, when investors were fretting over Europe's debt crisis and the debt ceiling impasse in Washington that prompted a US credit rating downgrade.

Markets got off to a mixed start but fell steadily as the morning wore on.

European shares held firm, meanwhile, after seven days of losses, boosted also by a series of robust earnings reports.

The large share of foreign trading activity in Japan and some other regional markets raised the likelihood that losses seen in the USA may spill over into other regions.

The technological Nasdaq Composite recorded a decline of 0.9% after stocks of large technology companies retreated.

The dollar rose to its highest in more than a week against a basket of currencies as traders piled back into the greenback amid the rout in stocks. On Monday, it gave up $1.30 to $64.15 per barrel.

The Russell 2000 is down 27.54 points, or 1.8 per cent.

Schlipman said those with a low risk tolerance should review their stock holdings to see if they should make any adjustments to protect themselves from future volatility.

But let's say wages and inflation do accelerate a bit more than economists expect.

The Dow dropped 1,175 points on February 5, 2018.

While Friday's market rout came amid US wage data on Friday that pointed to quickening inflation, which would lead to higher rates and, in turn, rising borrowing costs for companies, the selling Monday came amid few major data points.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 8 points, or 0.3 percent, at 2,639. The last fall of that size came in August 2011 when investors were fretting over Europe's debt crisis and the debt ceiling impasse in Washington that prompted a US credit rating downgrade.

The Nasdaq composite tumbled 63.90 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 7,051.98.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks sank 3.6 percent to 1,491.09.

The S&P 500, a broader gauge of the market than the Dow, declined more than 4%. That's good for the economy, but investors anxious it will hurt corporate profits and that rising wages are a sign of faster inflation.

Wall Street turned nervous after the country's 10-year treasury yield climbed to a multi-year high, amid fears that rising inflation could send interest rates higher.

As bad as Monday's drop is, the market saw worse days during the financial crisis. But the Dow is up 24 percent in the past 12 months the S&P 500 has gained 18 percent.

The last 10 percent drop for markets came in early 2016, when oil prices were plunging as investors anxious about a drop in global growth, which could have sharply reduced demand.

Oil prices were down after data showed USA crude output had reached record highs and the North Sea's largest crude pipeline reopened following an outage.

Strategists led by James Barty at Bank of America Merrill Lynch wrote Wednesday that, "In our view markets had gone too far too fast two weeks ago and the correction is merely an unwind of very overbought conditions".

Bond prices jumped after a steep decline on Friday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.80 percent from 2.71 percent. "When the feds start talking about raising interest rates like they have been doing for the past year it puts a damper on a lot of our expectations about how the economy is going to do I the next few years", said Nishimoto.
