Winter Olympics 2018 medals table: Latest standings from PyeongChang 2018

North Korea military parade

Moon had already shaken hands with Kim Yo Jongand Kim Yong Nam at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday in Pyeongchang.

By one estimate from South Korea's Ministry of Unification, more than 30,000 people defect from North Korea each year, yet the country has sent 22 high-profile athletes and hundreds of others into South Korea as part of its Olympics delegation.

In its first reports about the Games, North Korea's state-run media slammed U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday for what it called "shameful" and "snobbish" behavior not in line with the spirit of the Olympics.

Vice President Pence (L, front row) sits next to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the opening ceremony of the Olympics on February 9, 2018. Arriving on her brother Kim Jong Un's private jet for a three-day visit, Kim Yo Jong landed with the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam.

But away from the spotlight, these two unwanted guests, men dressed as North Korea supreme leader and the U.S. president, were escorted away from the premises.

Nothing about the opening ceremony for the 2018 Winter Games - not the music or the light shows, certainly not the speeches - carried quite as much charge as the entrance of the Korean athletes.

Asked whether it was hard for him to see Jong Un's sister sitting behind Vice President Pence at the Opening Ceremony, Mr. Warmbier said: 'No, she's in the Kim family, ' suggesting that he did not attribute the same blame for his son's fate to her as he does to her dictator brother.

Winter Olympics organizers say their omputer servers experienced a cyberattack during opening ceremonies, Yonhap reported on Friday.

The overture was conveyed by Kim's sister, Yo Jong, who is now in the South to attend the Winter Olympics, according to Deutsche Welle.

Powell Sworn In As New Fed Chief
Jerome Powell has taken office as the sixteenth president of the US Federal Reserve on Monday and takes over from Janet Yellen . The new chairman also takes over the Federal Open Market Committee at a time when it has plenty of holes to fill.

South Korea and the DPRK fielded a joint women's ice hockey team, the first Olympic team between the two Koreas.

"One of the main reasons North Korean athletes don't defect is due to their families back in North Korea", Benjamin Young, a doctoral candidate at George Washington University who has researched sports in North Korea, told ABC News' Mae Joo.

Relations between the two Koreas are apparently improving after North Korea made a decision to join the Pyeongchang Olympics that began Friday, but Pyongyang has so far shown no sign of abandoning its missile and nuclear development programs. Kim Dae-jung went to Pyongyang in 2000 for a summit that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, although it later emerged his government had paid $500 million for the summit.

It was not immediately reported whether the North Korean leader's sister would attend the evening match against Switzerland. White House officials stressed that Pence had applauded only for the American team, but Asia experts said the vice president's refusal to stand could be seen as disrespectful to the hosts.

"We are all touched by this wonderful gesture", said Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee.

Security for anything involving the North Koreans has been exceptionally tight.

"The North Koreans should understand that for a summit or any kind of serious talks to occur, Moon needs to be able to take something to Washington - something that addresses denuclearisation", he said.

Pence has meant to use his trip to the Olympics to caution the South against "falling for" the North's overtures, which in the past have been used as stall tactics to allow for continued development of its nuclear program.
