South Korea president Moon Jae-in opens Winter Paralympics

Freezing Temperatures to Set off Winter Paralympics

The games will be much like Winter Olympics - featuring similar sports like skiing and snowboarding - but the athletes competing have certain disabilities such as amputations, blindness or cerebral palsy.

Nine days of sports competition at Winter Paralympics are scheduled to begin tomorrow.

The opening ceremony took place on Friday at the city's Olympic stadium.

As the ceremony started, spectators were treated to fireworks and a lights show before the athletes' march, which was followed by the Paralympics flag-raising and lighting of the flame.

Despite the sub-zero temperatures, the athletes were afforded a warm welcome from the 35,000-seater arena with a spectacular performance that drew on South Korean culture via an eclectic mix of traditional buk drumming, K-pop and the climactic lighting of the Paralympic cauldron.

The North said that not showing the islets on the flag hurts the pride of Koreans.

It proved to be the trigger for a series of conciliatory steps between the two Koreas, who remain technically at war, culminating in Thursday's announcement at the White House.

"I get a lot of media coverage because I'm at both the Summer and Winter Paralympics, so hopefully that gets me recognized more and gives people a reason to come watch the Tokyo Games".

He told the Paralympians to keep fighting, play fair, have fun, and keep pushing their limits.

Microsoft even previous year offered a chance to all Windows 10 S users to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free. Less than one year ago, Microsoft unveiled a new version of its Windows platform called Windows 10 S.

Russian Federation remains banned from the Paralympics following a decision in 2016 that barred the country from competing in the Rio Summer Paralympics because of a state-run doping system.

North Korea, which had athletes competing in the Olympics after some late negotiations, will send two cross-country skiers to Pyeongchang. Also for the first time at the Paralympic Games, South Korea and North Korea will march into the main stadium together.

21-year-old alpine skier Momoka Muraoka led the Japanese delegation at the opening ceremony.

American snowboarder Brenna Huckaby, who lost her right leg below the knee, made headlines when she featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue.

In the Parade of Nations, the delegations from North and South Korea entered under separate flags, unlike the unprecedented unified march at the Olympic curtain-raiser last month.

Among the flagbearers at the opening ceremony were many of those figures.

Despite the separated marches, there was a moment of unity later in the ceremony as one of the North Korean skiers, Ma, carried the Paralympic torch alongside South Korean cross-country skier Choi Bogue.

During the Olympics, the women's ice hockey team competed wearing the Korean Unification Flag on their chest, a scene that was largely seen as a breakthrough in a geopolitical standoff on the divided peninsula surrounding the North's nuclear programs.
