Apple To Replace Intel Chips In Macs With Custom Processor By 2020

To help with Siri improvements Apple is on a hiring spree

Apple Inc. plans to use its own chips in Macs, starting in 2020, replacing the Intel Corp.

The Cupertino-based company already produces its own A-series processors in-house for portable devices such as the iPhone and iPad range, using architecture licensed from British firm ARM, The Guardian reports.

Apple didn't say anything in reaction and so Intel said that "We don't comment on speculation about our customers".

What appeared to be troubling news for Intel came as the California-based company worked to get to market with chips created to address vulnerabilities disclosed earlier this year.

Expenses rack up for family trying to return dead son's body home
Sarah Hart told police that she lost her temper and bent the girl over a bathtub and spanked her. During the investigation, police discovered the vehicle was pinned at 90 miles per hour .

Apple would become the only major PC vendor to use its own processors if it does decide to make the switch. Dell Technologies Inc., HP Inc., Lenovo Group Ltd., and Asustek Computer Inc. use Intel chips. Well, it's not just Apple but other companies like Microsoft are also implementing something similar but they will most likely stick to just the software aspect. Apple also designs its own processors for those devices, though it gets others, like TSMC or Samsung, to manufacture them.

Apple's interest in developing micro LED panels is believed to be born out of its desire to reduce and even eliminate its reliance on Samsung for OLED displays used in its newer products. Apple's latest iPhones and iPads have grown more powerful than some of the company's past Macs. The effort, code-named Kalamata, "comes as part of a larger strategy to make all of Apple's devices-including Macs, iPhones, and iPads-work more seamlessly together", reported Ian King and Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

Making processors for Apple is responsible for a not insignificant 5% of Intel's annual revenue, so this would not be great news for the chip manufacturer - and the market knows it. It will also let Apple dictate the terms of its roadmap instead of having to rely on Intel setting the future chip development plan. Apple has to walk the fine line of moving away from Intel chips without sacrificing the speed and capabilities of its Macs. The company has had a virtual monopoly on the market for years, with the only serious competition coming from Advanced Micro Devices, better known as AMD.

In less than two years, that brand new Mac of yours could be sporting an Apple-made CPU. Keep in mind that the Apple Watch dropping in 2018 will have thinner bezels and a slightly bigger display but it does not mean that it will take advantage of microLED technology.
