Baby born four years after Chinese parents' death in road crash

The fertilised eggs had been frozen for years

A surrogate mother from Laos has given birth to a baby boy using the couple's fertilised embryos, The Beijing News reported. Since the service is illegal in China, they had to look overseas, eventually hiring an agency and settling on Laos, where surrogacy is not prohibited. But five days before they were supposed to have a fertilized embryo transplanted into Liu, both of them passed away in a auto accident in March 2013, in the province of Jiangsu in China.

Since then the couple's parents have been fighting courts for the rights to the four remaining frozen embryos, which they finally won in January 2017, and in December the baby boy was born to a surrogate from Laos.

In December previous year, Shen and Liu's baby boy was born in a hospital in Guangzhou.

'Other babies have their fathers and mothers, but he doesn't.

At the time of the accident, the embryos were stored safely in a Nanjing hospital, frozen at minus 196 degrees in a liquid nitrogen tank.

The grandparents say they were thrilled their bloodline would be continued: CHINA

"The eyes are like my daughter, but still a little more like his father", the baby's maternal grandmother, Hu Xingxian, told the Beijing News.

The publication said, by what "legal minefield" had to go to parents of victims due to the lack of such practices the use of embryos in China.

The embryos also had to be transported by auto as no airline was willing to take responsibility for a thermos-sized bottle of liquid nitrogen. During her pregnancy, the surrogate mother traveled to Guangzhou, China, on a tourist visa.

The new grandparents have not yet decided how they will tell Tiantian about his background.

However, given that his biological parents were not alive to prove his paternity, the four grandparents underwent blood tests and DNA tests to prove that the boy was indeed their grandchild and that both his parents were Chinese. "We will definitely tell him what happened -- what choice do we have?"
