Donald Trump slams Amazon for paying 'no taxes'

Amazon.com, Inc. - AMZN - Stock Price Today - Zacks

President Donald Trump has taken aim and is at the other end of the barrel.

Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly says President Trump's tweets about Amazon are aimed at owner Jeff Bezos. He accused the firm of causing a "tremendous loss" to the USA government and "putting many thousands of retailers out of business".

Amazon declined to comment on the tweet.

Trump's criticism of Amazon's tax arrangements centers on products sold by third-party firms using its platform, on which it collects no taxes if they are coming from out-of-state retailers.

For a solid portion of the summer of 2017, Trump railed against the "fake news" in the Washington Post, often times bringing up Amazon in the process.

His latest missive comes a day after Axios reported that Trump has wondered aloud if there was a way to "go after" Amazon with antitrust or competition law.

The president claimed the company used the US Postal Service as their "delivery boy" in a tweet today.

Four on MVHS track team qualify for state
The Eagles took control of the meet from beginning to end as they secured a first-place finish in the men's and women's teams. The 4x200 relay team of Myah Kremer, Alexis Cole, Georgia Reemitz and Addison Rodel crossed the line fifth for five points.

Amazon pays the post office to deliver packages to customers' doors.

States can not collect taxes from mail order or online sales from firms without a physical presence in that state, according to a Supreme Court ruling in 1992.

Does Amazon avoid state and local taxes? Amazon's stock fell 1.4% in midday trade, with its market cap falling to $684.3 billion from $693.4 billion, while Microsoft's stock rose 0.6% to lift its market cap to $692.4 billion from $688.3 billion.

But judging from Trump's past tweets, there is a significant amount of evidence to suggest that the president is, in fact, "obsessed" with Amazon. It employs many of its 566,000 full and part-time staff in the United States and has allowed some small vendors to thrive on its service, but it has also been blamed by some for putting brick-and-mortar stores out of business as more people shop online.

As for the Postal Service, it has lost money for years, but online shopping has led to growth in its package-delivery business. While consumption habits, the over-supply of malls and megastores like Walmart played a role, so did e-commerce. Trump took a jab at Amazon, calling it a "no profit company", and at the Bezos-owned The Washington Post, saying it's "losing a fortune".

White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah denied on Thursday that Trump's criticism was a personal grudge.
