Around 15 people are killed after bomb blasts in Jalalabad

Afghan security personnel stand guard at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Jalalabad in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar

Smoke rises from the site of a blast and gunbattle between Afghan security forces and a handful of militants in Jalalabad city on Sunday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Militants have staged several attacks across Afghanistan this year.

The attack took place in a busy area of the city with many other official buildings nearby, including a school in which about 1,000 girls were trapped as the fighting raged. Witnesses said the explosions had caused carnage among passers-by.

A public office in eastern Afghanistan came under an armed attack on Sunday, officials said.

Guardiola: It Will Be Difficult To Break Man City's 100 EPL Points
The old record was held by Liverpool , who collected 98 points in the 1978-79 season (adjusted to three points for a win). These are the headlines as the Final Match Day gets underway in English Premier League .

Four bodies and about 20 wounded people had been brought to Jalalabad hospitals so far, said Dr Najibullah Kamawal, director of the city's health department.

The incident follows a string of explosions in the country, with the latest suicide twin blasts in the capital city of Kabul killing 25 people and injuring up to 45.

The provincial governor's spokesman also added that the security forces managed to rescue at least forty two people, including civilians and government workers. Dozens of people have been killed in voter registration centres in recent weeks, leading to fears that people could stay away from the elections, seen as a major test of the government's credibility.

Taliban militants and fighters of Islamic State outfit have presence in Nangarhar province, some 120 km east of Kabul.
