Facebook reports increased posts of graphic violence in Q1 2018

What's the score

Now it has released the numbers in a Community Standards Enforcement Report.

The inappropriate content includes vilification, graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda, spam and fake accounts.

An estimated 3 to 4 percent of Facebook accounts were fake accounts, the company said.

The new report was released in conjunction with Facebook's latest Transparency Report, which said that across the world government requests for account data increased by four percent in the second half of 2017 compared to the first half.

Facebook also took down 837 million pieces of spam in Q1, nearly all of which were identified and flagged before anyone reported them. In the first quarter of 2018, Facebook deleted 837 million spam posts and 583 million fake accounts, largely through its automatic detection technology. Facebook's technology did a better job of finding graphic violence and automatically identified 86% of the 3.5 million pieces of that kind of content that was removed during the period.

Facebook has been in hot water following allegations of data privacy violations by Cambridge Analytica, an election consultancy that improperly harvested information from millions of Facebook users for the Brexit campaign and Donald Trump's United States presidency bid.

He and other officers approached Christopher Wolfe, 21, who died of a gunshot wound after barricading himself inside an apartment. His father, Rob Pitts, was shot to death while trying to arrest a murder suspect earlier this month in Terre Haute, Indiana .

Had the company failed to do so, its monthly user base would have swelled beyond its current 2.2 billion. It said it estimates that between 7 and 9 views out of every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on the social media platform were of content that violated the company's adult nudity and pornography standards.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post also on Tuesday that his company is employing Artificial Intelligence tools to remove spam before users report it.

Facebook pulled or slapped warnings on almost 30 million posts containing sexual or violent images, terrorist propaganda or hate speech during the first quarter.

Facebook defines content of graphic violence as the information that glorifies violence or celebrates the suffering or humiliation of others, which it says may be covered with a warning and prevented from being shown to underage viewers. "It's partly that technology like artificial intelligence, while promising, is still years away from being effective for most bad content because context is so important", he said. And more generally, as I explained last week, technology needs large amounts of training data to recognize meaningful patterns of behavior, which we often lack in less widely used languages or for cases that are not often reported.

If a Facebook user makes a post speaking about their experience being called a slur in public, using the word in order to make a greater impact, does their post constitute hate speech? The rest came after Facebook users flagged the offending content for review.

"Today's report gives you a detailed description of our internal processes and data methodology. We look forward to your feedback".
