Hamas says ceasefire agreed to with Israel after significant exchange

IDF destroys Gaza ‘terror tunnel’ extending 900 meters into Israel

The Israel-Gaza border fell quiet on Wednesday under an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire after the most intense flareup of hostilities between Palestinian militants and Israel since a 2014 war.

"An agreement was reached to return to the [2014] ceasefire understandings in the Gaza Strip", Hamas' deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya said.

After a day that saw an enormous barrage of rockets and mortars fired at Israelfrom terrorists in the Gaza Strip, red alert sirens have continued late into the night, forcing tens of thousands of Israelis to sleep in protective shelters.

The high Palestinian death toll in the border protests has drawn strong global criticism of Israel, with rights groups saying Israel's use of live fire is illegal because in many cases it has struck unarmed protesters who did not pose an imminent threat to Israeli soldiers. The sirens sounded at 10:25 p.m. and were the first ones to sound in Ashkelon and Netivot, as most of the rocket fire during the day had been focused on the towns in the immediate proximity to the Gaza Strip.

More than two million Palestinians are packed into the Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal enclave.

"It comes in response to Zionist aggression and crimes against our people and our resistance fighters.in addition to war crimes conducted by the enemy every day against our people during the marches of return along the border of Gaza Strip". One boat turned away voluntarily, while another was stopped by Israeli officials.

"They have the ability, the control and the power to escalate or to de-escalate the situation, to rein in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and their own extremist factions in Hamas or to escalate the situation", said military spokesman Jonathan Conricus.

The flare-up is the biggest since Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist faction that rules Gaza, fought a 50-day war in 2014.

The United States is calling on the United Nations Security Council to condemn the Hamas rocket fire against Israel when it meets on Wednesday.

Israeli fire has killed more than 110 Palestinians, a lot of them during the Hamas-led protests, which climaxed on May 14.

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar at the time, told Al Jazeera that the militant group "assured our Egyptian brothers" that there will not be "a military confrontation with Israel".

Egypt was said to have performed a significant role in stopping violence in Gaza from sliding into full-blown military conflagration during the last escalation on the border.

Tuesday's exchange of fire came after weeks of deadly unrest along the fence between Israel and the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

Among those associated with RSY-Netzer to attend was Nina Morris-Evans, who said: "By Jewishly mourning the lives lost, we were not condoning terrorism, Hamas or violence of any form".

The furore began after IDF soldiers shot and killed 62 protesters on Monday, and injured more than 2,000.
