Helicopters on standby for large-scale evacuation in Hawaii

Workers in Hawaii plugging energy wells as lava flows nearby

Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, entered the fourth week of what may be an unprecedented, simultaneous eruption at its summit crater and along a 9.7-kilometre string of fissures 40km down its east flank. When lava buries plants and shrubs, methane gas is produced as a byproduct of burning vegetation.

Ths U.S. Geological Survey shared an image taken late Tuesday night that showed blue flames emerging from a road as fissures continued to spew lava from Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano.

Hawaiian authorities scrambled Tuesday to protect a major power plant from approaching lava, in the latest threat from renewed eruption of the Big Island's Kilauea volcano nearly three weeks ago. A high cone made by the lava has created a natural wall blocking the flow toward the plant, USGS scientist Wendy Stovall told reporters.

Production wells at a geothermal plant under threat by lava flowing from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano have been plugged to prevent toxic gases from seeping out, authorities said.

Even on the Big Island, home of Kilauea, Ige says "the one area that people need to avoid is lower Puna where the eruption is ongoing".

Nathan reports the volcano has destroyed at least 44 homes and buildings. This is only the second time in his career that he's seen blue flames during an eruption, Kauahikaua said.

Residents "should be prepared to leave the area with little notice due to gas or lava inundation", Hawaii County's civil defense agency said.

The methane can cause explosions when it's trapped underground as well. Lava has crossed a coastal highway and into the Pacific Ocean, causing a phenomenon known as "laze", and crept towards a geothermal plant in the Puna district.

One man had part of his left leg shattered after a piece of cooling lava hit him out of nowhere while he was on his balcony.

Officials shut down Puna Geothermal shortly after the current eruption began.

In Pahoa, just a few miles from the lava flow, Nathan came across Robert Carton, who was was seeking information about his father's home, which was evacuated weeks ago and may very well be lost.

Ige said transportation officials are "also looking at other alternative routes and trying to decide what would make the most sense in terms of providing safe passage".

Norwegian Cruise Line said it would reinstate port calls to the island's two largest cities, Kona and Hilo, after canceling them in recent weeks.
