Iran foreign minister insists Iran won't renegotiate nuclear deal in YouTube video

Column by South Dorset MP Richard Drax: Hopes of peace are a long way away

Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believe they fueled the argument for a United States withdrawal this week after Israel unveiled a cache of Iran's nuclear-weapons files, obtained in a Mossad raid in Tehran earlier this year.

Netanyahu's revelations were plainly timed to influence President Donald Trump's decision, expected later this month, on whether to stay in the Iran deal.

Trump gave Britain, France and Germany a May 12 deadline to fix what he views as the deal's flaws - its failure to address Iran's ballistic missile program, the terms by which inspectors visit suspect Iranian sites, and "sunset" clauses under which some of its terms expire - or he will reimpose USA sanctions. Even if the documents are authentic, they suggest that Iran had a nuclear weapons programme.

Yermakov stated that there was no reason for Iran to pull out of the deal, and it was in a strong position because it was fully meeting its obligations.

Zarif also took aim at Trump for wanting to change the deal.

Never mind that Trump's own secretary of Defense, James N. Mattis, told Congress last week that the agreement provides for "pretty robust" oversight of Iran's nuclear activities. But they have also started work on protecting EU-Iranian business ties if the US president makes good on a threat to withdraw.

Mr Trump could also use provisions of the agreement itself to walk away.

Trump Embraces the NRA, Abandoning Flirtation With Gun Control
That fact and the decision by Trump and Pence to attend this week's convention is a sign that the NRA remains a powerful force. Trump also attacked the UK's National Health Service in February , claiming it is "going broke and not working".

The European leaders flew home unsure of what Trump would decide.

The source familiar with the debate said US negotiators are hamstrung by the fact that they do not really know where Trump's "red line" is and so they can not tell the Europeans what would secure Trump's blessing.

Iran has said that it doesn't intend to reduce its footprint in Middle East affairs and stop developing a ballistic missile program, which it claims would be for self defense only.

"The fact that Iran conducted sensitive research in secret until 2003 shows why we need the intrusive inspections allowed by the Iran nuclear deal today", Johnson added in a statement.

It is far from certain that European countries that have enjoyed profitable trade with Iran since 2015 will shut the cash spigot just because Trump is unhappy and made a campaign promise to tear up the nuclear deal. If pressed to choose, the Europeans could be expected to opt for continued commerce with the mighty United States.

Would Israel be satisfied to see Western nations enter new talks with Iran?

Actually, as experts were quick to point out, it wasn't news that Iran in the past had aspired to develop nuclear weapons-that, after all, was the rationale for the agreement-or that it has dissembled about its previous efforts. Ominously, however, Trump continues to signal that he is willing to demolish the deal.
