No Rational Reason to Negotiate with US: Iran’s Shamkhani

Mike Pompeo on Iran sanctions

"By leaving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the US has practically torn up this worldwide agreement", he added, referring to a recent move by US President Donald Trump to walk away from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

In a statement, head of the Iranian delegation and Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araghchi said that Iran would decide whether or not to stay in the nuclear pact after the meeting's intensive discussions.

The secretary of the Islamic Republic's Supreme Security Council has reiterated that Iran's military presence in Syria, its regional policies and missile program will continue and are non-negotiable.

The U.S. already is well underway with plans to impose unilateral sanctions in areas such as finance that will not only affect Iran directly but give pause to other nations trading with it. Nations continuing to do business with Iran risk having their U.S. business penalized.

The best answer which clearly describes current state of affairs is Total, Maersk and Airbus's decisions to halt their activities in the Islamic Republic. The deal, in part also, meant to re-integrate Iran in the regional order of West Asia.

Iran's top security official says the country will maintain its advisory role in Syria and continue support for resistance groups after the U.S. demanded that Tehran put a halt to those activities.

The UN atomic watchdog policing the pact said on Thursday Iran continued to comply with the terms of the deal, but could be faster and more proactive in allowing snap inspections.

Pompeo spoke the truth when he implied that Iran was bluffing about its ability to defy sanctions, especially in the face of a restive population that is tiring of its theocratic tyrants.

In the IAEA's previous report it had said that Iran had informed it of a decision to "construct naval nuclear propulsion in the future". Under the current circumstances nothing is expected to change for the better for Iran.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is interviewed by The Associated Press, in New York, April 24, 2018.

"This would become another issue for the European Union to find a position on".

That, at least, is pretty much the strategy that Pompeo unveiled at the beginning of this week, though it doesn't by any means suggest that it'll be a successful one since critics have already pointed out that a lot of it depends on whether the U.S. can get other countries to go along with the sanctions, which might prove a lot tougher than the United States thinks.

Iran has threatened to resume its nuclear weapons programme if European nations do not promise to buy oil from Tehran in a sign of opposition against the White House. Tehran thus faces deepening worldwide isolation, continued Israeli attacks on its bases in Syria, and mounting domestic restiveness over economic and social distress.

European powers have until May 31 to present Iran with a plan to offset the U.S. pullout from its nuclear deal and Washington's renewed sanctions, a senior Iranian official said, with Tehran "weeks" away from deciding whether to quit the pact.

The answer was not long in coming.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week called for the negotiation of a new deal that would go far beyond the single focus of the 2015 agreement and would have the status of a formal treaty - a suggestion Iran flatly rejects.

A senior diplomat at IAEA headquarters said this was not prompted by any lack of co-operation or change of behaviour on Iran's part.
