Sharif compares Afghanistan, Pakistan's narratives in the wake of isolation

'Incorrect and Misleading'

Nawaz, while talking to reporters outside an accountability court in Islamabad, read excerpts from his interview with The Dawn during which he spoke on matters related to the country's foreign policy.

Facing backlash and ire from worldwide and local media, the NSC meet was called. They said that they did not provide access to the key suspect behind the attacks.

"Meanwhile, Pakistan continues to await cooperation from India regarding the arrest of Indian spy KulbhushanJadhav and the Samjhota Express attack, the statement said".

The National Security Committee (NSC), which reviewed the statement, was chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mahmood Hayat and Director General Inter-Services Intelligence Lt. Gen. Naveed Mukhtar.

The opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) party also slammed the former prime minister for implying that Pakistan allowed the attacks to happen.

Hours after the council's meeting, Sharif doubled down on his position, saying Pakistan was being isolated internationally due to its reputation. With Pakistan being a nuclear state, it is a cause for worry for the worldwide community if its prime ministers are puppets in the hands of an army that wields power without responsibility.

With regards to the NSC meeting which condemned Nawaz's statement, Abbasi clarified that the top civil-military huddle dismissed those words which were misreported.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz on Monday said that her father, former premier Nawaz Sharif, is now being termed a traitor after opponents failed to curtail the popularity of his "narrative demanding respect for vote", ARY News reported. He said misunderstandings are removed in the light of the facts. He went further to say, "This has to stop", and asserted: "There can be only one government - the constitutional one".

"Can a man like Nawaz, who presented the Kashmir issue at United Nations, paid tribute to Burhan Wani Saheed be termed a traitor?", asked Maryam Nawaz.

"If my statement doesn't sit well with someone, and if I am actually a traitor then let us have a national commission".

"I am being called a traitor on the media - they [the media] are being made to call me a traitor". "As the prime minister, I stand with Nawaz Sharif", he said, adding that Nawaz would remain the party's quaid.

He said those imposes martial were patriotic and those who worked day and night for development of the country were traitors, in a direct reference to the powerful military generals. India should not play into the army's hand by drowning out the charges levelled by Nawaz Sharif on its interference in Pakistan's politics.

The bit from the interview that has drawn the most interest is Sharif's decision to acknowledge the role of non-state groups in the November 26, 2008, Mumbai attacks.

The petition was filed in the Lahore High Court by advocate Aftab Virk on behalf of Pakistan Awaami Tehreek's Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, alleging that Sharif's statement is against national security and state institutions.
