20% tariff on pork imports among measures that take effect today

Washington apple farmers brace for impact after Mexico imposes tariffs on U.S. imports

Trump suggested last week that NAFTA could be replaced with two separate trade accords, one with Mexico and another with Canada.

Trump's tariffs, which were announced on May 31 and impose a 25 percent tax on imported steel and a 10 percent tax on imported aluminum, immediately angered foreign trading partners, but a new poll shows that Americans are somewhat split on whether the move will help or hurt the USA economy.

Canada has also announced plans to retaliate with tariffs of up to 25% on almost $13 billion of United States products, set to take effect on July 1.

News agency Reuters said that the retaliatory tariffs could "have political implications in some hotly contested races" in the United States midterm elections in November, in which the Republican Party is seeking to maintain control of both houses of Congress.

"There are disagreements. He's sticking to his guns".

The "world trade system is a mess", Mr. Trump's top economic adviser, Lawrence Kudlow, said on Wednesday.

"Communication lines are open", he said.

The conflict was provoked by a decade of British provocations against the USA, including impressing American sailors, imposing restrictions on American trade and providing support for Indian attacks on frontier settlements.

"If the numbers are accurate, an additional $70 billion in USA exports to China would be considerable - a 50 percent increase in US exports from 2017 levels", Chad Bown, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said in an email.

The EU came second at 14 percent, while Mexico ranked fifth with 5.4 percent of US imports.

Kudlow said Tuesday on Fox News that the president is "seriously considering" negotiating with Canada and Mexico separately, and forming two bilateral trade agreements.

The exchange occurred when Trudeau requested justification for the stated "national security" interests of tariffs on Canada, since the nation is among the closest and most reliable USA allies.

Roseanne Barr blames her racist tweet on sleeping pills
That being said, some even blamed none other than the former First Lady Michelle Obama for her sitcom being cut by the network. Confusingly, she has also continued to retweet messages that appear to contradict her apology.

But both USA neighbors are opposed to that possibility and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed their commitment to reaching a new trilateral deal in a telephone conversation last week.

Now, to be fair to Trump, the British attack on the White House was in retaliation for our attack on York, Ontario (a British colony at the time), but that's pretty much the only way that Canada is connected to this infamous act.

Trump travels to Canada on Friday for the G7 summit in Quebec.

"Canada is a secure supplier of aluminum and steel to the US defence industry, putting aluminum in American planes and steel in American tanks", Trudeau said last week.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, pressed about a Washington Post report that the White House was considering additional economic penalties against Canada, told reporters that Ottawa was unaware of any such move.

In response to Trudeau's objection to the recent steel and aluminum tariffs, Trump reportedly joked: "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" For example, Mexico is the second-largest consumer of USA pig meat, making the industry vulnerable to Mexican tariffs. The United States trade representative office told the Washington Post that the US actually has a trade surplus with Canada.

Adding to the uncertainty is European anger over Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the worldwide nuclear agreement with Iran. The administration granted temporary exemptions to several key allies, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union. "Right now they are getting chaos and protectionism".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel previewed the dynamics on Wednesday, telling the German parliament that "it is apparent that we have a serious problem with multilateral agreements here, and so there will be contentious discussions".

The south of the border country has already slapped a retaliatory 10% tariff on US pork products, and it will increase to 20% by July 5.

Trump also is set to hold a series of one-on-one meetings, including with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Analysts say the tariffs are created to hit US Republican strongholds ahead of mid-term elections in November.
