DHS: About 2000 minors separated from families

U.S. Border Patrol agents take a father and son from Honduras into custody near the U.S.-Mexico border on June 12 near Missio

Donald Trump's administration has repeatedly denied that its policy is to separate children from their parents when they cross the United States border illegally.

Attorney Jeff Sessions on Monday defended the Trump administration's controversial immigration policy that has resulted in the separation of undocumented children from their parents at the USA border, saying, "We're doing the right thing".

As the adults are being charged with a crime and detained, the children that travel with them are being separated and classed as unaccompanied minors. In the past, families in this situation have typically been subject to civil deportation proceedings instead of criminal prosecution.

Yes. While Trump's new immigration policy doesn't call for families to be separated, as pointed out by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the policy makes separations inevitable.

Defending a policy that has provoked an outcry around the country and accusations of human rights violations, Sessions said the government is trying to halt a five-fold increase in the number of families illegally crossing the border in just four years.

This week, House Republicans pitched a draft immigration legislation that would end the separation of children and parents at the border. In Drollinger's interpretation, there are citizens, legal immigrants, and foreigners - the latter were known as being "illegal", he said - and the Bible only forbids family separation for citizens and legal immigrants.

Ex-White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate how the Federal Bureau of Investigation was "weaponized" against President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign.

"Lots of things are said in the Bible, but that doesn't mean you should do them", Oliver said. He then went on to quote the scripture Romans 13, which he said commanded that people obey the law because God has "ordained the government for his purposes".

He says some criticism comes from people who advocate for open borders, while others may be unfamiliar with the original Hebrew words of the Bible.

On Sunday's broadcast of "Last Week Tonight", Oliver rebuked President Donald Trump's contention that the law required the action.
