FIFA Ban Ghana FA President

Ghana to dissolve football association over bribery allegations

Kwesi Nyantakyi, who is also a member of the FIFA Council, was seen in a hotel room taking a $65,000 bribe from a supposed businessman seeking to sponsor the Ghanaian football league for up to $15 million over three years.

Before the last World Cup in Brazil in 2014, Nyantakyi was accused of signing a $170,000-deal for Ghana to play in a friendly organised by match fixers.

Nyantakyi was accused in an explosive documentary called "Number 12", aired on Wednesday by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, of soliciting bribes amounting to several million dollars.

"In the said report I committed a series of errors of indiscretion. This is by no means an admission of wrongdoing for issues on the video".

BBC reports that Ghana's information minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said the government had "decided to take immediate steps to have the GFA dissolved", citing the "widespread nature of the apparent rot".

"I gravely associated the highest office of the land -the presidency- with private discussions I had with "scammers" who deceived me into thinking they were genuine persons interested in investing in our country", Nyantakyi said in his resignation letter sent to the GFA General Secretary.

What's more, the majority of people would identify themselves as Irish, Northern Irish or European before they would British. She also pledged to "explore workable solutions on the Ireland question". "We are today at a time of decisions and choices".

"Government will soon announce provisional measures to govern football activity in the country until a new body is duly formed".

Asiamah said the decision had been a hard one to take, and is aware that it is likely to trigger some sort of action from world football's governing body FIFA, who strictly forbid the interference of government in the national federations.

Nyanyakyi's resignation means the Ghana Football Association are now without a president and a vice president after George Afriyie was sacked from his post a month ago.

Nyantakyi, who is also a member of the Federation Internationale de Football Association council, was pictured taking $65,000 from an undercover reporter, who posed as a business man.

Ghana risks being suspended from the 2026 World Cup hosting vote next week, when it had been expected to vote for fellow African country Morocco against the joint bid of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
