How Ariya Jutanugarn flirted with disaster before historic US Open win

US Women's Open: Ariya Jutanugarn leads by four shots after three rounds

While Jutanugarn was fading, the 22-year-old Kim was rolling.

Smith carded her second straight five-under round for a 10-under total of 134 at Shoal Creek, where thunderstorms led to extensive delays on a course that had been soaked earlier in the week.

In the first use of the new two-hole aggregate playoff for USGA Open championships, it was Kim who gained the advantage after rolling in another monster putt for birdie on the first hole (No. 14) - while Jutanugarn made par.

Ariya had birdied her first hole and was six-under for the tournament through eight holes when the horn sounded to end play for the day.

For Jutanugarn, the bogey at the par-5 17th was uglier than the mess she made on the 10th.

American Danielle Kang (69) was four shots back of Ciganda in solo fourth.

They again missed the green, Kim in a bunker to the right and Jutanugarn over the putting surface in another bunker.

"Yeah. So my went back to my old clubs I have been using for a couple of years, I guess", said Smith.

Sarah Jane had a four-stroke clubhouse lead over fellow Australian Su Oh with half the field yet to complete the round. "Obviously that wasn't going to happen because I was thinking about the outcome too much". In his day, he said, when players competed for major championships, you would not have seen them applauding a good shot from a competitor.

Rather than settle in his isolation possessions, Durant looked to make plays when he encountered resistance in the half court. Team officials are going ahead as if Iguodala were unavailable for the remainder of the home stand.

Jutanugarn now holds a four-shot lead over Hyo Joo Kim. But Jutanugarn managed to steady the ship to force the contest to sudden death as Kim failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the second hole (No.18).

Play finally resumed just after 6 p.m. local time but was halted for the day barely an hour later amid fading light and nearby storm clouds that a few minutes later dumped more rain on an already soggy layout.

Ariya has eight LPGA victories in the past two years, including a major at the 2016 Women's British Open. So it's nice to feel like I'm seeing the greens really well and seeing some putts go in.

The South Korean, who shot a major record 61 at the 2014 Evian Championship, steadily chipped away at Jutanugarn's lead, ending the round as the only player with a blemish-free scorecard.

Smith has played 5-under on the back nine holes each of the first two days and settled for par on the front.

"I never had that final putt to win". The USGA statement says she left to be with her family in Ottawa, but didn't elaborate. It just felt like a last chance to make myself proud.

Paul Azinger, the 1993 PGA Championship victor, said Ariya's confidence would have taken a real blow had she not found a way past Kim Hyo-joo in the playoff.

In previous years, the tie would have sparked an 18-hole playoff on Monday.
