In Trump’s efficient USA family separation system, reunions take far longer

President Trump arrives for a meeting with House Republicans on Tuesday

It was a dramatic turnaround for Trump, who has been insisting, wrongly, that his administration had no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of federal law and a court decision.

The Trump administration separated more than 2,000 children from their parents since early May, garnering overwhelming backlash from the public. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Trump continued to falsely place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Democrats in Congress.

Mr Trump said his daughter, Ivanka, had told him the situation with the families looks bad, one politician said.

With emotions running high, a handful of House Democrats protested the Trump meeting, yelling out at Trump in a rare face-to-face demonstration against a president by sitting members of Congress.

Pictures and accounts of the separations sparked outrage and a rebellion among Republicans in Trump's own party, as well as global accusation that the United States was committing human rights violations. And some Republicans said they hoped the extra day would help them rescue the measure bill from near-certain defeat.

Despite the order, there was no plan in place to reunite the thousands of children already separated from their families, according to multiple USA media reports citing officials from the Health and Human Services Department (HHS). Expanded facilities could be key, as migrant children separated from their parents are now housed by a different department, Health and Human Services.

Before departing for Minnesota, Trump signed an executive order to keep families together at the border.

More than 2,300 minors were separated from their children at the border from May 5 through June 9, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

"Right now we're focused on getting this bill passed", Ryan told reporters.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader from NY, is adamant that Trump can end the family separations on his own and that legislation is not needed.

GOP leaders have struggled to rally support from Republicans.

First Lady Melania Trump 'hates' to see families separated
Bob Goodlatte, said he had spoken to Trump on Saturday and that the president "is fully committed to both of these bills". Melania Trump also spoke out about the thousands of migrant children separated from their parents.

"Anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it, but at the same time we don't want people coming into the country illegally", he added.

A new CNN poll out Monday found that 67% of Americans oppose the separation of children from their parents, with 68% of independent voters disapproving of Trump's position.

Trump met for about an hour at the Capitol late Tuesday to try to find a solution that both holds to his hardline immigration policy and ends the practice of taking migrant children from parents charged with entering the country illegally.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Council of Europe and Pope Francis all took issue with the "zero tolerance" policy.

Because the Justice Department can't prosecute children along with their parents, the result of the zero-tolerance policy has been a sharp rise in the number of children detained separately. In the order, the president also directs Attorney General Jeff Sessions to file a request in U.S. District Court in California to modify the Flores settlement so that the families could be detained together until their court dates.

"This isn't who we are", he said in a statement.

Even if Republicans manage to pass an immigration bill through the House, which is a tall order, the fight is all but certain to fizzle in the Senate.

Democrats and Republicans had at least two bills crafted Wednesday to address broader immigration issues, but it was not clear if any had adequate support to pass. "We are especially heartbroken and enraged by stories of breastfeeding children being taken from their mothers' embrace".

Peter Schey, class-appointed counsel in the Flores case, said Wednesday there was nothing in the agreement that prevents Homeland Security officials from detaining children with their parents, "as long as the conditions of detention are humane and the child remains eligible for release, unless the child is a flight risk, or a danger to herself or others, or the child's parent does not wish the child to be released". "Nobody wants to see children and parents separated, just like no one should want to see illegal drugs and gangs pouring across our border".
