Kim has a 'one-time shot'

Singapore

The summit has fuelled hopes in South Korea that the two leaders may weigh a formal declaration to end the Korean War.

It's a technicality, but yes.

Trump and Kim are expected to discuss peace on the Korean Peninsula, with Washington pushing for Pyongyang's denuclearisation.

"That's a flawless deal for North Korea".

Three years of bloodshed ended on July 27, 1953, but the war technically continues today because instead of a difficult-to-negotiate peace treaty, military officers for the USA -led United Nations, North Korea and China signed an armistice that halted the fighting.

The arrival of the Air China Airbus 330 flight at Changi airport raised speculation that a delegation of North Korean officials had joined an advance team headed by Kim's close aide, Kim Chang-son, who was already in Singapore to prepare for the talks. He's got an opportunity, if you look into history, very few people have ever had.

After the real Donald Trump left the G7 summit early on Saturday to make his meeting with the real Kim Jong-un, he sent a series of tweets announcing his excitement. Seeing Nobel Peace Prize laurels and eyeing potential to show up his critics at home and overseas, Trump is granting Kim the global legitimacy he's long sought in hopes of securing a legacy-defining accord.

Trump seems to want to.

North Korea's secrecy would make it hard to end its nuclear program quickly, said Robert Einhorn, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. If he gets an agreement, regardless of whether North Korea eventually refuses to comply years down the road, it will bolster him domestically, and assist Republicans in the November mid-terms. And there is a possibility of something like that.

We really think that North Korea will be a tremendous place in a very short period of time.

Hundreds of North Korean security experts have no doubt been up nights wondering how to safeguard Kim Jong Un since Trump shocked the world by accepting the North's invitation to meet.

In 1997, Kim and his father left the country in the midst of a four-year-long starvation and economic crisis that some estimates suggest claimed the lives of between 240,000 and 3.5 million North Koreans, out of a population of 22 million. Kim's detailed command of the issues central to his country's nuclear conflict has impressed US officials who have interacted with him since Trump's diplomacy with the North began. Trump's comments on Thursday reflected an understanding of that.

Kristof tells CBC's Susan Ormiston that while denuclearization and peace between North and South Korea are centre-stage at the June 12 summit, it's important not to forget the troubling human rights issues in North Korea. But the Trump-Kim meeting will surpass them all in the sheer spectacle, a summit of global significance timed to begin squarely during prime time in the United States on Monday evening, a strategic decision by the ratings-conscious president.

Japan's government is anxious that Trump, with his "America First" focus, may accept a deal that eliminates the threat from North Korean intercontinental ballistic missiles that could strike the US mainland, without dealing sufficiently with medium-range missiles that could strike Tokyo.

"It's a fairly big process".

"It's a one time shot and I think it's going to work out very well", he said. "It's a standard North Korean media tactic. But I can not imagine they'll reach a peace treaty" in Singapore, Hill said.

Some also question whether the status quo is that bad.

The stakes are high, with American authorities warning that North Korea could soon have the ability to strike anywhere in the continental U.S.

At worst, the summit will be merely a photo opportunity, exploited by North Korea to heighten the legitimacy of a nation state that is isolated, impoverished and shut out of all major global institutions. "It was fun to see them", he said.
