Lava from Hawaii volcano destroys 117 Big Island homes

"A lava breakout from the south margin of the flow near the intersection of Highway 132 and Railroad Avenue has completely encircled the Green Lake cone".

Plumes of volcanic ash belched into the air by periodic daily explosions from the crater at Kilauea's summit have posed an additional nuisance and a health concern to nearby communities. Over the weekend, the US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported more than 500 earthquakes in a 24-hour period - the most ever measured by HVO scientists. The strongest quake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale resulted in the volcano blowing out an ash plume that reached up to 8,000 feet, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

"For us it's more of a vacation area, but for those who live there permanently, they're trying to figure out where they're going to be living", he said. Most earthquakes associated with the ongoing Kilauea Volcano eruption are in the magnitude 2-3 range. Places to stayKilauea volcano eruptions:Near-continuous eruptions.

Officials say lava from Kilauea volcano destroyed hundreds of homes on the Big Island overnight.

The report of mounting damage followed a mandatory evacuation order issued Thursday night for a portion of the Leilani Estates subdivision in the midst of "vigorous lava eruptions" threatening homes, the Civil Defense said. Some said they were staying because they had nowhere else to go, officials said.

White House also said on Tuesday that Trump would meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Washington on June 7. Trump cited hostile comments from North Korea as the reason he withdrew from the potentially historic summit.

"There's a lot of destruction", Talmadge Magno, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator, told CBS affiliate KGMB-TV. The lava from the Kilauea volcano has covered an area of 9 square kilometres - four times as big as New York's Central Park, according to USGS.

The latest upheaval of Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, comes on the heels of an eruption cycle that began in 1983 and continued nearly nonstop for 35 years, destroying more than 200 dwellings and other structures.

"These remnant and sub-populations of wildlife may no longer persist, rapidly decline, or become further fragmented and/or contract in range", said Steve Bergfeld, the Branch Manager of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, in the release.
