North Korean official to visit White House to deliver letter to Trump

In April, senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, who is now in the United States and plans to meet Trump, surprised visiting South Korean reporters by apologizing for media coverage problems during a joint cultural event in Pyongyang.

Kim Yong Chol became the most senior North Korean diplomat to visit the White House in 18 years on Friday, and presented a letter from Kim Jong Un to President Donald Trump.

The envoy, Gen Kim Yong-chol, hand-delivered a letter from the North Korean leader to President Trump.

South Korean President Moon Jae In, who met with Kim Jong Un twice in the past two months, has said progress in inter-Korean reconciliation will be a crucial part of worldwide efforts to resolve the nuclear standoff with North Korea because Pyongyang wouldn't give up its nuclear program unless it feels its security is assured.

Trump said the letter from Kim, hand-delivered by Kim Yong Chol, was "very nice" and "very interesting" - but then said he had not opened it yet.

"Our movement is committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons and we recognize that this historic summit is a once in a generation opportunity to work for peace and nuclear disarmament", Kawasaki said. Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign ratcheting up sanctions and pressure to push North Korea to the negotiating table resonates with them. However, his comments were the most positive from any U.S. official since Trump abruptly canceled the meeting last week after belligerent statements from the North.

Many expert observers expect Kim, perhaps with tacit Chinese backing, to demand that Washington also reduce its own military footprint in South Korea and loosen its guarantees to treaty ally Japan.

KELLY: And, Scott, do we have any more insight into what would count as a successful summit from the North Koreans' point of view, what they want in exchange for at least starting talks about maybe giving up their nukes? "Now we're going to deal, and we're going to really start a process", he said.

The hard-hitting batsman tweeted: "It's a great honour to be leading the ICC World XI side, that too for such a good cause". Subsequent x-rays revealed a crack at the top of the ring finger on his right hand.

The President said he looked forward to the day when the sanctions could be lifted Trump, however, said the current level of sanctions on North Korea would remain. But Trump also promised he would ensure security for both Kim and the North Korean regime if he does close down his nuclear weapons program. Each side, she said, will "try to add some steps to get advantage".

"We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12th, and we never were".

Meanwhile, North and South Korean officials are working to increase communication between the two countries and improve their relations.

The president has not denied speaking to the North Korean leader, and tantalized reporters with suggestions that he has done so. The president ordered steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, the EU.

Kim Yong Chol, who is making his first United States visit, is the most senior North Korean on USA soil since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok met then-president Bill Clinton in 2000.

Mr. Trump has said the June 12 summit is likely only the beginning of talks with North Korea, suggesting he may be in this for the long haul.

Pompeo warned at a news conference after talks with Kim Yong Chol in NY on Wednesday and Thursday that the path to better relations would not be easy.

The president is referencing ongoing discussions with North Korea in preparation for a June 12 summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
