Serena Williams victorious: Wimbledon amends rules to grant her 25th seed

Queen of Centre Court Serena Williams in action at Wimbledon on her last appearance in 2016

Seven-times Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has been seeded 25th at the tournament this year despite a world ranking of 183 as she continues her return from maternity leave.

Wimbledon has generally "followed the WTA world rankings" when seeding its athletes, per ESPN, but Williams "has been afforded protection from having to face any other seeded player in either of the first two rounds" as she recovers from her injury and looks to take part in just her second tournament since giving birth to her daughter in September.

No player has dominated women's tennis like Williams, 36, who holds a record 23 Grand Slam titles. "I don't think it's the right thing to do. I have tried and I should be seeded".

"I think it's now right that WTA offers a protected ranking". I have the right and I should be seeded and if they put her in front of me then I will just lose my spot that I am supposed to have.

Our next tennis action comes from the German Open in Hamburg.

It means the 36-year-old American, victor in 2016 but absent last year because of her pregnancy, will avoid the big names until at least the third round. The five-time major victor looked much more like her old self at the French Open, where she made the quarter-finals.

The draw for Wimbledon will take place on Friday.

The US Open Grand Slam in NY has said it will update its seeding policy to take into account a player returning from a pregnancy.

Halep is top seed in the women's singles with 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza at three, while defending men's champion Roger Federer is number one seed despite Spaniard Rafael Nadal taking over as world number one this week. The slide resulted from a near year-long absence triggered by a freak injury, in which she stepped on broken glass and later developed blood clots in her lungs following her 2010 Wimbledon championship. The tournament gets underway Monday.

At 17 after her first Grand Slam title, the U.S. Open. But because of an injured pectoral muscle, Williams pulled out of Roland Garros before what would have been a showdown against five-time major champion Maria Sharapova. At that point, most analysts said Williams had improved at each stage but had not reclaimed her peak form.
