Red Bull turned Verstappen's engine down after Ricciardo retired

5:06 Toto Wolff felt pleased with the opening practice session of the Austrian GP after Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas

That was Verstappen's fourth career victory, tying him with Eddie Irvine and Bruce McLaren for the most wins by any driver without ever taking pole position.

"So phenomenal for us to win in a Red Bull vehicle at the Red Bull Ring, be given the trophy by an ex-Red Bull driver".

"It was hard to tell because Kimi was catching, Sebastian was catching", said Verstappen.

"The vehicle came very good but we just ran out of the laps - we took it easy too long", Raikkonen said.

"To win around the Red Bull Ring with all the Dutch fans here is incredible".

"I think the auto has been quite good today", he said.

The Austrian Grand Prix had a few unexpected twists and turns, with both Mercedes AMG F1 machines retiring from the race, while Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen managed to take a fine victory at the event.

How did Verstappen do it?

Verstappen went on to control the race once Mercedes' failure to pit Lewis Hamilton under the early virtual safety vehicle, caused by Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas's retirement from second place, cost the Briton track position later on.

Belgium vs. Japan - Football Match Report
Belgium looked visibly rattled despite Eden Hazard hitting the post nearly immediately in an attempt to draw the Red Devils level. Vertonghen too marked a milestone with his goal, a looping header from out wide that caught Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima cold.

Q: (Scott Mitchell - Autosport) Max and Kimi; although the race was 71 laps long, it was effectively decided by the move at turn seven on a frenetic opening lap.

"I had plenty of people coming to see me before the start and saying, 'This was going to be a walk in the park, 1-2, you have the quickest vehicle'".

"It was all about keeping the slip, the temperatures under control, particularly the left rear". He's always asking for information, managing those tyres, and that's why they didn't blister up. Ricciardo also ended the race prematurely, with a gearbox issue forcing him into retirement.

In a critical error, Mercedes chose to keep race leader Lewis Hamilton out and their victory hopes quickly unravelled from there.

"The risk I see is if the FIA and promoter aren't fully aligned we end up with compromises and vanilla-type regulations", he said. "Even if you can put on another 50 milliseconds for the race, you will do it because that might be the difference".

Responding to a question about Liberty Media's performance since it assumed control of F1's commercial rights in late 2016, Horner praised its work in improving the experience for fans but called the planned 2021 changes "by far" the biggest challenge it will face.

Listen to Lewis Hamilton's team radio during the Austrian GP after his team failed to pit him during the safety vehicle. Kevin Magnussen ensured there was more reason for the Haas team to smile, finishing in fifth place.

- Team Principal Christian Horner added: "Unbelievable feeling".

Surrounded by the Styrian Alps, the 4.3-kilometre Red Bull Ring is one of the fastest tracks on the circuit, with drivers on full throttle for about two-thirds of each lap and reaching an average speed of 240 kph.
