NASA has postponed the launch of solar probe Parker

NASA is sending a spacecraft straight into the sun's glittering crown for the first time

The Delta will hurl the probe into the inner Solar System, enabling the Nasa mission to zip past Venus in six weeks and make a first rendezvous with the Sun a further six weeks after that.

Washington D.C: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Saturday postponed the launch of its Parker Solar Probe spacecraft by a day.

It is protected by an ultra-powerful heat shield that can endure unprecedented levels of heat, and radiation 500 times that experienced on Earth.

NASA's planned mission to explore the sun was delayed Saturday as the rocket failed to take off during the designated launch window.

NASA is poised to launch a $1.5 billion spacecraft on a brutally hot journey toward the Sun, offering scientists the closest-ever view of our odd and mysterious star.

The probe will help scientists understand more about the nature of the sun by taking measurements of solar winds, a flow of ionised gases.

Rocket maker United Launch Alliance said it would attempt the launch again today, provided the helium-pressure issue can be resolved quickly.

The weather forecast was expected to be about 60 per cent favourable for launch, according to ULA.

Reaching the required speed means the Parker Solar Probe needs one of the most powerful rockets ever built.

The probe's main goal will be to learn the secrets of the corona, the unusual atmosphere surrounding the sun.

"The coolest, hottest mission, baby, that's what it is", said Nicola Fox, the project scientist at Johns Hopkins University.

"This space weather has a direct influence, not always positive, on our technology in space, our spacecraft, it disrupts our communications, it creates a hazardous environment for astronauts and in the most extreme cases can actually affect our power grids here on the Earth", said Alex Young, associate director of NASA's Heliophysics Science Division.

The heavily shielded Parker Solar Probe will make 24 such close flybys over the next seven years, getting within just 3.83 million miles (6.16 million kilometers) of the sun's surface at closest approach. It was then scrubbed by NASA and the teams will attempt a launch on Sunday morning.

A series of instruments on board the spacecraft will measure the magnetic and electric fields, plasma waves and high energy particles.

"I realise that might not sound that close, but imagine the Sun and the Earth were a metre apart".

During its historic journey, the probe will jet past Venus at speeds of 430,000 miles per hour, the equivalent of flying from NY to Tokyo in one minute. In this Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, astrophysicist Eugene Parker attends a news conference about the Parker Solar Probe named after him, at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
