Venezuela says explosions an attack on President Nicolas Maduro; firefighters dispute statement

The parade Maduro attended marked the one-year anniversary of the Constitutional Assembly, a legislative body packed with loyalists that arrogated powers from the opposition-ruled National Assembly.

A journalist shared a video from the event on Twitter.

Witnesses said the Venezuelan president was apparently attacked by several explosive laden drones on Saturday. State television in Venezuela showed President Maduro abruptly cutting short a speech on Saturday, Aug. 4, causing hundreds of soldiers present to break ranks and scatter.

Seven military personnel were reportedly injured in the explosion, but Maduro "has already returned to his normal job", Rodriguez said, adding: "They have failed and they will continue to fali".

The US and other countries have expressed alarm at the loyalist structure propping up Maduro, saying Venezuelan democracy was being undermined.

He said the "far right" working in co-ordination with detractors in Bogota and Miami, including Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, were responsible.

Maduro and others on the podium looked up startled and the cameras panned to soldiers who had been lined up in formation in the street.

Maduro, who escaped unhurt in the incident, said "everything points" to a right-wing plot against him and also claimed arrests have been made in the case.

In a statement, the group says keeping those have forgotten the Constitution in government runs contrary to military honour.

Maduro accused neighbouring Colombia and unidentified "financiers" in the United States of being behind the blast, while some of his officials blamed Venezuela's opposition. "Today they attempted to assassinate me", he said.

According to a report at the Washington Post, firefighters on the scene are disputing the government's version of the events.

A little-known group called the "National Movement of Soldiers in T-shirts" claimed responsibility for the attack.

The organization did not respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking more information. The officer was hunted down and killed by Venezuelan forces.

The group says that while it was not successful at first, it's just a matter of time before it is.
