Obama rips Trump, GOP in 'state of our democracy' speech

Obama Denounced President Trump in Speech, Warns of 'Pivotal Moment'

Obama remarked the USA needs to restore "honesty and decency" in government. "We're supposed to stand up to bullies". How hard can that be? "Saying Nazis are bad?"

Obama, who had not once invoked his successor's name in public appearances since exiting the White House, did so on Friday while describing people who stoke fear and division in order to "keep their power and keep their privilege".

"It did not start with Donald Trump". "He is a symptom, not the cause".

The hourlong speech, however, wasn't just about Trump - although there was no shortage of shots taken at him - but the forces that led to his presidency and the current state of the country. We don't need a messiah.

"I'm asking you to be neither blind to, nor dismayed by, reality - but motivated by it", Obama wrote in an email Thursday to supporters of Organizing for America, a grass roots organization he founded. "The stakes really are higher".

Historically, midterms are lightly attended and Obama made a point of reminding his audience that only one in five young people voted in the 2014 midterm election. That's not how our democracy's supposed to work. "I've found he's very good, very good for sleeping".

Former president Barack Obama has accused his successor of "capitalising on resentments" in his first major speech since he left the White House.

It also hoped the ruling will be the first step towards guaranteeing the full range of fundamental rights to such persons. In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court strikes down Section 377 that criminalises homosexuality.

"It shouldn't be Democratic or Republican to say we don't target certain groups of people based on what they look like or how they pray", he said.

Below is a roundup of the fawning sycophant celebrity screeds in response to Obama's speech. That's how real change starts, Obama said. This Congress has championed unwinding of campaign laws to give billionaires outside influence over our politics.

"As a fellow citizen, not as an ex-president, but as a citizen, I'm here to deliver a simple message that is that you need to vote".

However, the data, in fact, show that Obama oversaw a steady, if somewhat disappointing, economic recovery, and those trends have continued in Trump's first term. He's expected to hold a rally with OH gubernatorial candidate Richard Cordray Thursday, and with seven Democratic House candidates in California Saturday.

"When there is a vacuum in our democracy, when we don't vote, when we take our basic rights and freedoms for granted, the politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment takes hold".

"I needed to spend some time one on one with Michelle if I wanted to stay married", Obama joked Friday. And in his opening remarks, he talked about how George Washington had gracefully exited the stage, setting a path for future presidents.
